Chalmer Beef celebrates Golden jubilee and raises funds for Little Eden Society

Chalmar Beef celebrated their golden jubilee whilst raising funds for the Little Eden Society

A few weeks ago I was invited to a Beef Auction. My initial reaction was “what would I possibly do there”? I’m delighted that I said “yes” because not only was it fun and interactive BUT the food! OMG, the food was AMAZING! I am not a big meat eater BUT I do love a piece of good meat, every now and then.

Chalmar Beef recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. While this milestone was a worthwhile celebration, how they chose to commemorate their special day was even more astounding; raising funds through a meat auction with some of the proceeds for Little Eden Society which cares for 300 residents living with intellectual and physical disabilities.

“The auction was a wonderful success. A portion of the funds raised will go towards supporting the daily costs associated with running Little Eden. We are very much entrenched in our community and honouring our legacy while taking care of those in need is part of our value system,” explains Chalmar Beef CEO, Willem Wethmar.

Chalmar had a variety guests attend their golden jubilee, with their customers, suppliers and members of the media making up most of the turnout.

“Our customers are our greatest stakeholders. Having them celebrate with us was very important and we hope to continue enjoying the working relationship we have with them,” continues Wethmar.

Also, I got to hang with the MC, “Lallie” aka Thabiso Khambule. And yes, I did ask him to “laugh” like he does on Jacaranda FM.

The Chalmar Beef farm and abattoir operation includes over 300 dedicated and passionate people, it has a farm feedlot capacity of 20 000 cattle and a further 19 000 cattle on pasture. The farm also produces maize silage on 1 000ha of high potential soil. The grain feeding of the cattle at Chalmar Beef is an exact science which requires dedication and hard work. Their operation runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“There is one constant which has not changed and will not change for Chalmar Beef and that is the focus on producing consistently tender and juicy beef. As we don’t buy market-ready cattle from other feedlot producers, we have complete control over the production process from the feedlot into the abattoir,” Wethmar explains.

The farm is still owned and managed by the Wethmar family who started the business 50 years ago. They continue to be proudly involved in the day to day running of Chalmar.

“We would like to thank the many people who came out to support us and the worthy cause we are advocating for. We would also like to extend our gratitude to those that have played, and are continuing to play, a positive role in setting the culture of our work ethic and core values. We look forward to a future of innovation, growth and mutual success as Chalmar Beef celebrates another 50 years,” Wethmar concludes.

Beef with a cause! Well done Chalmer Beef. Here’s to another 50 years.

The Fry Family Food Co. leaders in the plant-based food category, have just launched their new artisan, stone-baked vegan pizzas. These are the first pizzas produced by the brand and are 100% plant-based.

“Pizza is a new journey for us and we are very proud of this new range,” says Tammy Fry, International Marketing Manager of The Fry Family Food Co., “These pizzas are proof that there doesn’t need to be a trade-off between taste and healthy plant-based foods.”

With a Recommended Retail Price of R89.99, the range includes two delicious varieties. The Smoky BBQ style pizza is perfect for entertaining friends on a ‘Fryday’ night. It’s topped with Fry’s marinated Chicken-Style Strips, roasted red onion and grilled peppers. The Mediterranean pizza offers an authentic taste of Italy and is made with sliced cherry tomatoes, baby spinach, black olives and Fry’s Chicken-Style Strips rubbed with Italian herbs. Both varieties are non-GM and dairy free.

Explains Tammy, “Our pizzas are crafted in Italy and the sourdough base is hand stretched and leavened for 24 hours, then wood fired to create an unforgettable taste experience. They are also a wonderfully convenient way for people to bring more plant-based eating into their daily lives – they are delicious and so easy to prepare.”

Artisinal sausages!

Aside from the new pizzas, the company also launched a new range of artisanal sausages. There are two delicious flavours in the new range – the Wood Smoked Breakfast Bangers (smoked to perfection and seasoned with Fry’s secret spice blend) and the Artisan Mediterranean Sausages (seasoned with sweet rosemary, garlic and green olives).

“The quintessential Fry’s sausage has always been a corner stone of our product range, and was one of the first products that Wally Fry made in our kitchen all those years ago. We have gently expanded the range over the years, but these two new artisanal flavours are going to take our sausage offering to the next level. The flavours took a while to perfect as we were looking for something very specific, but our innovation team have nailed it and the Wood Smoked Breakfast Bangers and Artisan Mediterranean Sausages are truly delicious,” says Tammy.

Adds Tammy, “There are loads of brand-new versatile and yummy sausage recipes on our website that we created especially for the new additions. Now there is no reason to feel deprived when you swap your meat sausage for a much healthier plant-based one. All the recipes are available in our new sausage cookbook ‘Fry’s with a bang’ which you can download here for free.”

The recommended retail price for the new sausages is R37.99.

Why MEAT FREE Mondays didn’t work for us + being flexitarian with Fry’s

*This is NOT a sponsored post! However, the products in my feature image was a gift from Fry’s Family Food Co when we attended their family braai day.*

Meat free Monday didn’t work

Meat free Monday never worked for us… The reason is very simple – Sunday leftovers 🙂 We grew up having a huge Sunday lunch with roast and curry and veg and and and… Was your family big on Sunday lunch? Even if it was just the household, consisting of four family members, there would still be enough food to feed an army. Long after Dude and I set up our home together, we carried on with this tradition. Even though it was just the TWO of us…

I soon grew tired of making a feast for two people and the pressure of racing home after the church service to get lunch ready by 12, no I lie we ate at 1pm in our house, was just too much! I opted to start a NEW tradition, and Sunday Dinner was born for us 🙂 Fast forward life and throw in two kids, who are ALWAYS hungry, and we are back to making Sunday Lunch. But on a smaller scale. Mama aint got time to slave for hours and my offspring devours hours of hard work within minutes!

A few years back we opted to go meat free during the Lent period. The shortened version according to Wikipedia – Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday.

This was a major challenge because now we needed to find alternatives to meat! I’m NOT a big lover of red meat but my husband and kids are. The recent addition, currently two years old, definitely takes after his father here by being a meat eater.

And this is how we discovered Fry’s products

Now being new to this no meat eating schedule, it was challenging to make food that actually looked edible. My husband would look at a dish and say “where’s the meat?” I could live off veggies though! So for forty + days we ate meat free meals. Every Single Day. By the time the Lent period was done, my husband was at the end of his tether. Needless to say we have given up random things over the last couple of years. But having gone through that first meat free stint, I was hooked.

We’ve been using Fry’s products for a few years already. Man have they upped their game! They have new and interesting products. That Kasha, aka cereal, is life for my kids. Let’s not forget the ICE-CREAM. Go find it today!

I’ve tried to incorporate it into our weekly schedule. We tried Meat Free Monday! At first it worked, but after a while it was cramping our Sunday leftover style and we failed dismally. So I devised a plan. A trial for this Spirited Family. No meat on Tuesdays and Thursdays, if you can manage two days a week 🙂

Tuesdays and Thursdays are meat free days in our house. Even visitors have to adapt. Alternately, just bring your own food when you’re visiting if you don’t like our schedule.

So instead of conforming to societal norms…and you know how much I despise being put in a box- I created our norm. It doesn’t always work out but it is yielding magnificent results. For me though. I can feel my body perform optimally when it is being nourished. This might sound strange BUT my body doesn’t like me if I have too much red meat. I can have fish all the time, chicken in moderation because who in the world only eats chicken. So the combination of adding a little meat every now and then with all the meat free varieties available is working for me.

And there is a term for this lifestyle…I’m a FLEXITARIAN

My family indulges my lifestyle by simply eating what is on offer BUT these days they are loving the meals. One particular product, the Fry’s chicken style nuggets! I’ve had countless arguments over the fact that it IS a plant based nugget. There is NO chicken in there. It just tastes THAT good!

Have you tried the Fry’s chicken style nuggets?

On another note, the Fry’s products are very quick and easy to prepare. As we use them regularly, we’re experimenting with different cooking methods/adding sauces/condiments.

Change your mindset…. It is NOT meat, so be open to new possibilities.

We are NOT vegetarian and neither are we vegan. We just made a conscious decision to incorporate small changes into our lifestyle to becoming a healthier family. A more plant based approach to a healthier lifestyle. We’ve made small changes and set some realistic goals.

Verdict from Dude – we’re moving in the right direction with our meat free meals.

Listen to your body! It knows what YOU need!

Easy dinner recipes with Daily Dish and how we survived the week that was

The week that we survived

This delivery of four family dinners which was delivered at my office was what saved us from eating really badly this past week. The week that was but we survived! Yes, survived. Dude was unexpectedly called for shift duty for the entire week. Dudie had a project, oral and autobiography that needed to be completed. This is besides the normal daily homework. And I felt like I was drowning at work.  Now add a sick baby, aka Troll, to this and somewhere something was bound to be neglected.

Daily Dish ensured that we were had healthy dinners

How resourceful –  they minimise waste and send you only what is required for your meal. Every spice/sauce is accurately measured according to the recipe.

Our aim is to provide our customers with ingredients that are highest quality, fresh, seasonal, local, and sustainably produced. We get our food directly from the Fairview farm and other local fresh produce and free range farms to ensure that we deliver only the very best produce… Daily Dish

Fresh produce straight from the farm. I tried as best as I could to get Dudie to help prepare the vegetables but my attempts fell on deaf ears. Granted, I could’ve tried harder but I decided to let him be and just allow the control freak in me to do it the way I wanted to. Here is what we ate this past week:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I did manage to post on my instagram feed on  despite all the madness during the week

Troll is still on the mend. However, Dudie has now also caught whatever is currently doing the rounds in our house. Both kids are SICK!

Daily dish is convenient and saves YOU time

You don’t have to set foot in a store to buy ingredients. They do the shopping for you 🙂 Convenient much? Talk about time management.

Each dinner comes with a beautifully printed recipe card, outlining the method and preparation time required. I find it difficult to follow a recipe as the rebel in me doesn’t want to play by those rules. I cook with emotion so you can be sure that you will taste my emotion in my food. Even on the days that my emotions were drained out of me, dinner still tasted good 🙂  Let’s just say that the recipes are fool proof!

What you get when you order a box from Daily Dish

Your 4 dinners will be delivered to you at home or work – you decide. The ingredients are kept in a refrigerated box to ensure that it stays fresh. You just need to refrigerate it at home, within 12 hours of delivery. Each ingredient is labelled for the meal it is intended to be used for and it boasts a best before date.

Familiar BUT healthy and innovative meals

Looking for healthy dinner recipes? Menus change weekly to ensure that you don’t eat the same boring mundane meal at dinner time every.single.week. The meals are innovative in using ingredients that you normally might not use in your daily cooking routine. Daily dish offers a variety of dinner boxes to suit YOUR dietary requirements. You can choose a box for 2-4 people or a solo box for 1 person. Dinner boxes range from a family box/classic box/ banting box/vegan box/goodie box or a pork free box.

As a family, or rather I made the decision on behalf of them, to make healthy food choices so these easy to cook dinners rings true to my strategy.

As a side note – they also have a WINE box option, if you’re interested 🙂

My Dude, aka the husband, was skeptical about these dinners as he feels our or rather his portion size compared to someone else’s portion size might not correspond. The proof was in the pudding when even Dude agreed that the portion sizes were very generous indeed.

So here’s something for YOU from Daily Dish & Spirited Mama!

For every NEW subscriber to Daily Dish, you will get R250 off your first box AND a Fairview Farmstead cheese box, valued at R350. Just click on the link below. It takes you directly to the order page and will automatically apply my code at checkout. This offer is valid until 30 October 2018.

It’s pay week. Go on treat yourself and your family to Daily Dish’s convenient healthy dinner boxes.

Happy cooking!
